6 ways to Experience the “Entrance” in Lakes Entrance

Lakes Entrance - Gippsland Lakes

Don't be surprised if you gasp as you approach the outskirts of Lakes Entrance, and view the 90-Miles of golden sands that open up the turquoise waterways of the Gippsland Lakes - it takes everyone’s breath away.

Lakes Entrance was named after the breathtaking man-made entrance you witness as you slowly descend into town so it is only fitting that you make sure you experience the wonder of “The Entrance” as many ways as you can throughout you stay in glorious East Gippsland.

The Entrance is a picturesque sight that can be viewed and admired from many angles. So, set yourself a goal to take it in from as many ways as you can.

Here are our top 6 tips to marvel at the site from different ways.

1.     Jemmy’s Point Lookout

Check out Lakes Entrances “Entrance” and the Gippsland Lakes from the Jemmy’s Point Lookout at the top of Kalimna Hill. With plenty of parking available for both cars and long vehicles. Take plenty of photos from the top but also take a short walk down the hill to the next lookout further down as you will have a clear view of the Entrance there as well as information signage with a brief history on Lakes Entrance.

Located 3.8km West of Beachcomber Holiday Units a 6-minute drive but we love to walk along the Esplanade to take in the Cunningham Arm and enjoy the walk up the hill looking out for the elusive koalas that live in some of the gum trees. It takes us around 45 minutes to walk for Beachcomber to the lookout.

2.     The Entrance Walk

Our favourite walking trail in all of East Gippsland. This is one of the first things we recommend to all of our guests to do. A 5km around trip - you will have the choice of the walking track, the 90-Mile Beach or the inside of the Lake. Each option will get you up to the Entrance where you will see the Australian Fur Seals that live on the western side of the Entrance and if you are lucky, you may see the resident Burrunan Dolphins that call the Gippsland Lakes home.

The beginning of the walking track starts 450m south from Beachcomber Holiday Units just over the Cunningham Arm Footbridge located across the road.

Make sure you pack your walking shoes and a bottle of water, then when you get back head to the Aquadome to have a spa and sauna to relax with your free gold membership.

3.     On water by kayak or stand-up paddle board

Take to the water and kayak or stand-up paddle board to Flagstaff Jetty then walk the boardwalk around to the Entrance. A great way to relax and enjoy the lakes. Let us know if you would like to borrow one of our kayaks or head up to Venture Out to hire a kayak or stand -up paddle board or even join in on one of their breath-taking sunset SUP tours.

We take our kayaks across the road to Myer St Jetty and paddle up to Flagstaff Jetty, it takes us around 30-45min to paddle up there depending on the tides the approximately 10 minutes to walk the rest of the way to the Entrance.

4.     Cruise Boat

We are spoilt for choice in Lakes Entrance with few different cruising choices to explore the great Gippsland Lakes.

We have Lonsdale Eco Cruises a wonderful company that provides Scenic Cruises with Devonshire tea (these guys seem to have some kind of dolphin magnet; they won’t guarantee that you will see them but they do happen to see them quite a bit).

Peels Cruises have been cruising the Gippsland Lakes for over 100 years, they provide the option for a Scenic Cruise, a Winery Tour and Lunch Cruise and also the very popular Metung Luncheon Cruise.

For a more personal option get in touch with Skipper Pete at Lakes Explorer : Tours and Water Taxi who is able to take up to 4 visitors on a personal and educational tour to your chosen destination.

Each one of these options will take you on an informative tour up the channel to the Entrance where if you are lucky, you will receive an up-close encounter with the Australian Fur Seals.

5.     Helicopter Tour

See the Entrance from a bird’s eye view with a helicopter tour from Lakes Entrance Helicopters.

Definitely an activity to add to your bucket list, the views are magical, mesmerising and memorable - an experience to remember. You will be well looked after and informed by David your pilot and will marvel at the sheer size and amount of water there is in the Gippsland Lakes.

We believe there is nowhere in the world you can experience such beauty as Lakes Entrance by air in a Lakes Entrance Helicopter Tour.

6.     Segway Tour
